Health Plus Betaine HCL + Pepsin (180 tablets)
(This item shipped to UK, Europe & USA only)
180 Tabs of 324 mg of Betaine HCL + 50 mg Pepsin, to help the digestive system maintain proper acidity levels for breaking down the food we eat. Free from sugar, lactose, yeast, gluten and wheat.
Betaine Hydrochloride (HCL) is an acid form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. Often used as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid for people who have low stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria). Pepsin is an enzyme which helps breakdown food proteins in the stomach, making then much more digestible and therefore helping the stomach do its job much more effectively.
Ingredients: Active ingredients per tablet: Betaine HCL + Pepsin 324mg, Pepsin 50mg.
More information below
Betaine Hydrochloride (HCL) is an acid form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. Used alone or in combination with pepsin, it is an effective supplement for people who have low stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria) or even an absence of stomach acid (achlorhydria).
Why is it in Vitiligo Store?
Hypochlorhydria often goes undiagnosed or, worse still, wrongly diagnosed as high stomach acid, because the symptoms are confusingly similar. This confusion often leads to the inappropriate use of antacids, which may give temporary relief but make the condition much worse by lowering acid levels further. It is now thought to be statistically more likely that an individual who experiences symptoms of indigestion will have too little stomach acid, not too much and the risk of deficiency increases with age. It is also statisitcally more likely that individuals with vitiligo or other autoimmune conditions will have hypochlorhydria. In fact low stomach acid, when left untreated, has been positively linked to numerous chronic diseases, food allergies, leaky gut syndrome, and autoimmune conditions including vitiligo.
How does it work?
Insufficient stomach acid means that the body is unable to absorb essential antioxidant vitamins like C, A and E, as well as vitamin B12 (a common deficiency in vitiligo) and the minerals calcium, magnesium and iron. It also means that proteins are not broken down and digested properly.
Taking an appropriate amount of Betaine HCL with meals (especially those containing protein) provides the stomach with the right levels of hydrochloric acid to be able to digest food properly, absorb nutrients for the maintenance of good health and to empty the stomach effectively (thus avoiding acid reflux or heartburn). It also creates the right environment to sterilise the stomach and kill bacteria and yeast that may be ingested, reducing the risk of candida and other forms of bacterial overgrowth.
Tips from The Vit Pro
- It is worth knowing that not everyone with low stomach acid experiences digestive symptoms. So, even if you don't notice abdominal discomfort, bloating or heartburn after meals, it is still worth finding out if you are deficient. This is especially important if you have vitiligo, food intolerances or any other chronic ill health.
- If you cannot get a clinical test done (which would be the ideal scenario) it is still possible to judge your stomach acid levels by the "trial and error" method described here.
- If you discover that you do have low stomach acid I recommend either taking a betaine supplement that includes pepsin or else taking pure betaine HCL and a separate digestive enzyme supplement because thorough digestion and proper nutritional absorption rely on the presence of sufficient levels of both acid and digestive enzymes.
We recommend that if you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition or are currently taking medication that you seek advice from a health professional before you take any dietary supplement. Always read the product directions before use and do not exceed the recommended intake. Food Supplements should not be taken as an alternative to a balanced diet. Keep out of reach of children.
