What is it?
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is essential to a great many biological processes. It is found in various foods (notably in dairy products, nuts and some green vegetables) and sufficient dietary intake of it is required to build and maintain strong bones and skin and healthy communication between the brain and various parts of the body.

Why is it in Vitiligo Store?
Calcium in the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) helps regulate the skin's pigment cells, allowing it to tan in sunlight. Calcium is only properly absorbed and retained in the body in the presence of vitamin D and, since a high proportion of vitiligo sufferers are deficient in vitamin D, they may also find their calcium levels are too low. This supplement is formulated with vitamin D, also an essential nutrient, which is synthesised in the skin and is responsible for skin pigmentation. This supplement provides 100% RDA of calcium per daily serving and 250% RDA of vitamin D, which means that it may be helpful in rectifying vitamin D deficiency at the same time as helping with calcium absorption. It also contains magnesium which, like vitamin D, is essential for proper calcium absorption.

How does it work?
Calcium is not only essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth (perhaps its best known functions). It is also involved in many other crucial biological processes in the muscles, heart and nervous system and regulates at least 3 skin functions that we know of:

  1. It regulates the rate of turnover of skin cells and the thickness of the epidermis
  2. It regulates normal skin color by stimulating melanocytes (pigment producing cells)
  3. It regulates lipid barrier processes by stimulating the production of sebum
As well as helping the body to absorb calcium, vitamin D is known to decreases the expression of various cytokines (a category of small proteins that are involved in signalling biological responses at a cellular level) that cause vitiligo.

Tips from The Vit Pro

There is a delicate balance between the body's requirements for calcium, vitamin D and magnesium so it is important not to stray too far outside of a recommended ratio of one to another. I recommend this supplement because it has been formulated with all three in appropriate quantities, as opposed to three separate supplements so that a safe ratio is maintained. I would therefore advise against taking more than one supplement at a time containing significant additional doses of any of these nutrients without checking with your nutritionist or doctor first.

Warnings
If you are taking any prescribed medication, suffer from any medical conditions, are pregnant or breast feeding always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not exceed stated dose. Food supplements must not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. Store in a cool, dry place. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Why I created Vitiligo Store

I created Vitiligo Store in response to requests from visitors to my vitiligo recovery blog site. Increasing numbers of readers asked me where they could try the same products as I used myself.

So I decided to make them all available in one online shop. My guiding principle has been to provide the following three things:

1. products that are backed by scientific or anecdotal evidence to support their safety and effectiveness;
2. the level of personal service, helpfulness and courtesy that I like to receive myself; and
3. the confidence that comes from dealing with someone who understands your needs, because they share them.
